Um. Apparently. After a solid decade of rumour. I blame these guys myself. Smug, self-centered, music-hating dorks.
Is it just me, or has everyone forgotten that Pavement were crap by the time they split? And how they ruined music for a generation because everyone wanted to be them?
Guess it doesn't matter, the amount of suckers who'll pay to see "the Pixies" play live again. (Pixies were also crap when they first split, duh.) And I don't begrudge those Pavement guys their payday in the sun, and weren't they fun back in '92 and '93, but... fuck it. Malkmus, I'm ashamed of you. If this is true.
Here's the news story, if you're interested.
And here's a video.

Pavement weren't crap by the time they split. They were different to they were when they started, but they were still great.
ReplyDeleteSo yes, it's just you.
Actually, if you check yr archive footage, I think you'll find it was just me and Malkmus.
ReplyDelete'They were different to HOW they were...' I meant to say. It's early.
ReplyDeleteHe didn't enjoy being in Pavement but the music still stands up. Whether Malkmus disowns it or not is irrelevant. He's great but like most artists, prone to saying silly things.
ReplyDeleteJust relisten to Major Leagues, Spit on a Stranger or Speak, See, Remember. Terror Twilight is a brilliant album. What a grumpy writer or a jaded musician happen to think can't taint that in my mind.
Come on, they've got some cracking albums and songs - 'Fillmore Jive, 'Strings of Nashville' being two essential songs that spring to mind. Think you're aiming at the wrong target here.
ReplyDeleteSome of us couldn't see them in 1992/93. Because we were eleven. Hooray for reunions!
ReplyDeleteThe Pixies and Pavement weren't crap when they split but they both broke up at the right time: when they were starting to go downhill. The reunited Pixies were great live and I'd go see a reunited Pavement show. Why not?

They 'd changed so much by the time they split: they'd gone from being a Fall tribute act to a Fairport Convention tribute act !(only joking, readers. I used to really like Pavement).Hey, are they going to get Gary Young on board? I often (well, sometimes) wonder what happened to him.

I saw the 1st Boston show, which was absolutely amazing.
by the time they were doing their final tour in 99 I can safely say that I'd never seen a band more bored with the process of playing their material. a real downer...
hell, they'll make a boatload of cash. who am I to begrudge that?

I love all their work, to be honest. I know that many feel Terror Twilight marked a decline, but I don't perceive it. In fact, I'm inclined, as much as I love their Drag City material, to argue that their early releases were overrated compared to what came later. But I'm one of their most devoted fans.

I saw some great Pavement shows back in 92/93 but have no desire to see them again... I really can't help but wish bands would just stay split - nothing good will come of it. (I obviously reserve the right to have a different opinion when it suits me)
