One-minute reviews - 16: White Hinterland, Ric McCulley, Scout Niblett, T:Lo

OK. This is me written out for the day. Back to my research.

One-minute reviews - 15: Hayseed Dixie, We Are Only Riders, Patches & Gretchen, Ned Collette & Wirewalker

The second part of my doubtless ill-received batch of 60-second reviews. I've lost friends over these, y'know - so tread with care.

One-minute reviews - 14: Love Is All, Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Zola Jesus

The return of the series that no one wants to read, written by the critic that no one realises exists anymore. The idea being that it takes 60 seconds or under to listen to and critique the music under discussion. Oh, what joy!

One-minute reviews - 13: Hum, Christy & Emily, Death To Trad Rock, Knight School

It's nearly Christmas. Of course that has no relevance to anything I'm about to write whatsoever. Just thought I'd lay a little context on you. I have four minutes to spare, so I thought I'd write you four reviews.

One-minute reviews - 12: MV + EE, Butcher Birds, Hawnay Troof, Junior Boys

Actually, I'm a little out of practice right now, and these reviews are running closer to 90 seconds from the moment I first listen to the music to when I type the final word but...One-minute-and-a-half reviews doesn't really have the same ring to it, does it?

One-minute reviews - 11: Loene Carmen, The Millipedes, Los Campesinos!, Puerto Muerto

Absolutely no feedback whatsoever from the last crop of four. Undaunted, the bloodied and ignored critic battles on...

One-minute reviews - 10: Joker's Daughter, The Drones, Giants Of Science, YACHT

And so it continues... I was tempted to make this installment Brisbane-centric but realised it would lose me the three friends I have left remaining.

One-minute reviews - 9: SA Rawls, Mathew Sawyer, Wet Dog, Karen O And The Kids

I don't see anyone else stepping up to the plate and taking this challenge.

I don't see any web editors lining up to syndicate this series either.

One-minute reviews - 8: Bo Ningen, Lonelady, To Kill A Petty Bourgeoisie, Tap Tap

Anyone can write about music, sure.
But can you write about music when the clock's ticking down, you know nothing about the artist in question and you've never heard the album before?

And you only had a minute to start with.

One-minute reviews - 7: Goran Bregović, Katsen, Secret Birds, King Creosote

Life is complicated, but brief. Why spend longer writing than someone will spend reading your words? Or indeed, listening to the music? Bring on the One-Minute Review!

One-minute reviews – 6: Kittie, The Very Best, Panther, El Perro Del Mar

Kittie - In The Black

Back, due to no demand at all. "The new low in music criticism" (trademark pending). You can be brief. You can be brutal. But can you cut the mustard when there's only 60 seconds on the clock and you've never listened to the album before?

One-minute reviews - 5: Arctic Monkeys, The Cribs, Talk Normal, Visqueen

Right. Time for some rock. Indie rock, granted - but rock nonetheless.

One-minute reviews - 4: George Pringle, Michael Jackson, Dolores O'Riordan, Tiny Vipers

Hey, listen up. Seriously. I'm open to any and all syndication offers. Could start a whole new water cooler craze.

One-minute reviews - 3: Daniel Johnston, Scarce, Soulsavers, Wavves

Wavves - Wavves

Well, no one's slapped a cease-and-desist order on me yet. Indeed, quite the opposite. One fellow was kind enough to remark, "I'll take the one-minute reviews of a man who loves music (i.e. you) over a lot of critics who love, frankly, themselves. : )" and another, "most accurate Mint Chicks review yet/ever". I asked him if he was being droll, and he denied it vociferously. So, whatever. Obviously people appreciate sloppy music criticism. I don't know why this should come as any shock to me.

One-minute reviews - 2: Taken By Trees, Crocodiles, Heavy Trash, recs of the flesh

I think this series needs to be quite formulaic, with set criteria - kind of like Joe Bob Briggs' series of Drive-In Movie Reviews during the 90s. Any suggestions?

One-minute reviews - 1: Rowland S. Howard, The Mint Chicks, Eddie Hinton, Reverend Horton Heat

Self-explanatory, really. Fuck reviewing albums in 140 characters or less. Anyone with half an ear and an eye for Elmore Leonard dialogue can do that. The real challenge is: can you say everything that needs to be said, given only 60 seconds on the clock?
