Song of the day - 135: Town Bike

I'm a sucker for any band that's a sucker for early Ramones the same as me, especially if they have a female singer.

ET Recommends - 43: Peepholes

Again, I'm reminded of the section in the infamous Steve Albini article/tirade against major labels, originally printed in The Baffler, wherein he wishes that bands would try to sound more like Metal Urbain instead of The Beatles. Because, as I've written before, it seems that we've turned full circle - at least in the circles formerly known as "underground" - and bands like No Age, Crocodiles and Vivian Girls are way taking the side of the late 70s French punk experimentalists.

Letters from Rosie, 3

The third in the series from my coolest correspondent. (Although I'm pretty chuffed at The Gossip saying they reckon me to be the "most important and interesting critic of all time" - I'd be even more chuffed if I believed they were being remotely serious.)

Incidentally, the criteria she's applying to Vampire Weekend - whose bassist once invited me to perform oral sex upon his penis, following this Village Voice column - I applied to The Vines a few years earlier.

Rosie follows...

ET Recommends - 36: Kitchen's Floor

As I said somewhere else just now, I keep forgetting how much I remain in love with the thrill of live music.

Vivian Girls, last night

First, a brief shout-out to Brisbane ladies, Feathers. Only saw half a number, following a rather traumatic 12-hour car drive from near Rockhampton to be at the show, and it seemed a little (dare we say) post-Vivian Girls, but what I saw was easily enough to intrigue. Seemed like my kind of folk. Possibly. Oh, whatever.

ET Recommends - 32: Pens (the immediate fallout)

All of the following is taken from responses to a link on Stevie Chick's Facebook page, linking to my previous blog entry on the mighty Pens. (If you're one of the participants and object to your words being appropriated here, please let me know.)

ET Recommends - 32: Pens (update)

Bangs wept, but this band have just been lifted from the realms of the merely great (which anyone can be) to being the coolest in the UK!

Defending the indefensible - 9: The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart

So when does a pallid copy of the past cease to be a pallid copy of the past? It is simply when enough time has gone by, that everyone has forgotten how rush-of-blood energising this music can be?

This week's Top 10

It's Saturday. This week's Top 10 is all about the girls. And I'm still in love with the idea of Karen O as perfect pop star.

Everett True vs Vivian Girls

I'm listening to a stream of the new Vivian Girls album Everything Goes Wrong on headphones.
