The 21 Most Read Entries On My Old Blog

Thought I'd print the stats from this one, as well.

The 11 Most Read Entries On My Blog

I'm going to discount the Lady Gaga = hermaphrodite one. It was top of Google Image search for months, and hits were accordingly skewed. (And don't bother searching for it, because I took the entry down: you can find the photograph here, if you really want to.)

Song of the day - 13: Everybody Was In The French Resistance... Now!

Oh, this is just wonderful, pure el Records - Bad Dream Fancy Dress, Louis Phillippe, Songs For The Jet Set.

Song of the day - 12: Sportique

There's a moment in a recent Dr Who when the Doctor confronts Bernard Cribbins' character, and asks belligerently, "Why are you so linked to my fate", or something similar. I feel the same way sometimes about this man.

Song of the day - 11: Dandy Livingstone

Much as I, Charlotte and Isaac love The Specials - and we do, trust me, we do - and much as I, Charlotte and Isaac love the Specials' version of this particular song, I've gotta confess something to you right here, right now.

Song of the day - 10: Alton Ellis

Alton Ellis, dudes. On Fridays, he rules my world.

ET Recommends - 54: Velociraptor

There's a dinosaur exhibition down the Science Museum on the Southbank: and Isaac's favourite part of it is the video of the dinosaurs singing, "Danger, danger/Velociraptor/Danger, danger/He's got the hook claw".

Song of the day - 9: Las Kellies

I hope these wonderful ladies from Argentina don't mind me uploading these two tracks for you all, as a taster of their ace minimal girl-punk.

Song of the day - 8: The Undertones

I've been listening to this killer live recording of The Undertones - Rockpalast 17.10.1981 - on my way in to QUT in the morning, on the 380. Man alive, it makes me so happy and loving to be alive.

Song of the day - 7: Kate Nash

Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. I'm really not sure if... well, y'know. If I heard this straight up without knowing the artist, would I like it? FUCK YEAH. And knowing the artist? FUCK YEAH!

Song of the day - 6: King Tubby & Santic Allstars

Borrowed this fine compilation from the QUT library the other day, The Rough Guide To Dub.

The Venn Diagram of ET's Musical Hatred

Many thanks to Clem for this. And it's not his fault it's not a Venn Diagram. He never claimed it was.

(It's a flow chart. I knew that.)

Ladyfest London - an ad

This here is an ad. Pure and simple. But it's for a great cause - the night is dedicated to women's charities (rape crisis centres, women's shelters, abortion clinics) - and there's some seriously great music going down. So: you live in London? Free this Thursday? You know what to do.

ET Recommends - 53: Bitch Prefect

This recommendation comes courtesy of the fine Eternal Soundcheck blog.

Song of the day - 5: Hole

Coincidence, that's what the timing of this blog entry is. Coincidence. I'd been planning on running this one for weeks....

Song of the day - 4: Pavement

Someone who keeps the faith sent me an advance promo of Quarantine the Past: The Best of Pavement, and I  remembered that my listening pleasures in the car are limited.

Hole joke

Q) How many Hole 2.0 fans does it take to change a lightbulb?
A) None. They just stare at its dull sheen and imagine it still works.

Wolfmother joke

Q) How many Wolfmother members does it take to change a lightbulb?
A) Just one - but only if Led Zeppelin have shown them how to do it first

P.S. I like Wolfmother's songs just fine. I also liked 'em just fine when I first heard them 35 years ago

Pitchfork joke

Q) How many Pitchfork writers does it take to change a lightbulb?
A) 4.2

Indie joke

Q) How many indie kids does it take to change a lightbulb?
A) Why does it need to change?

Song of the day - 3: Quasi

It's Quasi, and it's not even the finest track from their forthcoming album American Gong - that honour belongs (today) to 'Everything & Nothing At All'.

Defending The Indefensible - 13: Courtney Love

I don’t like bands reforming usually – and I certainly don’t like bands reforming when they contain only ONE original member.

Song of the day - 2: The Deadnotes

Today is a Friday. This means I have the recordings of The Deadnotes (with The Legend!) from the previous week to listen to. This means that - if I'm being honest with you - I rarely listen to anything else. And this was a particularly fine session.

Let's see how long this series lasts...

The Thin Kids - the first interview

Well... a Crib + The Legend!

Letters from Rosie, 5

So I wrote back to Rosie, following her previous email, stating that I wasn't sure that many of us have the constancy she claims on our behalf - that we all contradict ourselves and doubt ourselves and (speaking personally) sometimes wish we could be co-opted by the mainstream, but that it's long since occurred to me that the mainstream simply doesn't want to co-opt me. And so I'm forced to create alternatives, whether I want to or not.

This is what she wrote back.

ET Recommends - 52: Ivy St.

Nasty, in that late 70s/2010 Melbourne way. Full of challenges and silence. Reminds me of awkward Brisbane sweethearts Kitchen's Floor. The sort of music I would have thrashed around to, angrily, 30 years back. (Christ, I'm old.) The sort of music I might yet thrash around angrily to, if I ever manage to see this Tasmanian 3-piece play onstage and they live up to the promise of their recorded sounds.

Letters from Rosie, 4

Well, of course, since I posted this, my other featured correspondent got straight in touch...

Plan B Magazine

All 46 issues of Plan B magazine 2004-2009 are available now to download FREE (PDF format) at the Plan B website. It makes me feel so proud, that I was part of this. Respect due to all the folk back in London and Brighton, and everywhere.

How many music critics does it take to change the world?

Just one.

Letters from Rachel 1

As my previous featured correspondent seems to have dropped off writing to me ever since I started posting her emails (with permission!), I thought I'd make a switch. It often occurs to me that those who write in showering me with praise are way more deserving of it than me...

The Cramps and the five fucking greatest rock'n'roll bands ever

(from Facebook)

Everett True
The Cramps. The Cramps. The Cramps. Only one of the fucking five greatest rock'n'roll bands ever. Ever
20 January at 16:38

Lainy Small, Debbie RawCat, Andrew Hitchcock and 12 others like this.

My Last FM Top 25, February 2010

This is a snapshot, taken over the past three months. You have to understand that it excludes iPod plays, CDs (at home and in the car), work plays, etc...but whatever. It reads like a pretty good list to me.

Defending the indefensible – 12: Vampire Weekend

A brief return for a former series on this blog: it seems timely, bearing in mind Vampire Weekend's outrageous current popularity in the States. The following is reprinted from my old Village Voice blog, dated Dec 11, 2007. Its publication led to an offer from bassist Chris Baio for me to "suck his dick" - a generous offer indeed, which I have yet to take him up on.

Daniel Johnston live @ (outside) Monster Children

The conversation between Loene, Millie and myself went something like this.

Camera Obscura live @ The Zoo

Camera Obscura played a few weeks back in Brisbane.

Both myself and Charlotte were excited about this one: for years now, this Scottish band have been in-car favourites, the mix of 60s harmonies and melancholy lyrics, the sweet-sweet harmonies do for us, time and time again. In the event they didn't disappoint, despite the late hour. Tracyanne - with typical deadpan humour - announced early on that we lived in "the sweatiest city in the world", and the crowd was oddly restrained, only coming alive towards the end, but... the remark I made at the end of the following reprinted review still holds. Oh yes.

Joanna Newsom live @ The Tivoli

Joanna Newsom played a few weeks back in Brisbane.

On occasion, she bordered on the magical: her voice slightly more reminiscent of Kate Bush then I've recall it being before: the song about the daddy long-legs being particularly charming and lengthy (I might have dreamed the subject matter): the drummer in particular bringing his instrument alive through simple use of elegance and silence, the way most drummers are entirely unable to do: the new songs (and the evening was stuffed full of them) boding well for her forthcoming TRIPLE album. I stayed the length, and that's rare.
