ET Recommends - 37: Bitter Springs

...and just when I'm feeling low - lower than I have for weeks - Simon sends me through the video for the new Bitter Springs single.

Reasons Why I Will Never Be A Mainstream Music Critic, No 2

This. (The convention, the blog itself and the folk who run the Australian music industry. The unquestioning acceptance of all this among my 'peers' is the most disheartening of all.) (There's a lot of blokes in that photo. Presumably females don't exist within the Australian music industry.)

Reasons Why I Will Never Be A Mainstream Music Critic, No 1

This. (Both the band, and the idea of a fucking corporate award ceremony.)

Happy 'Quit MySpace' Day

This is a great article about an incredibly unrealised music platform site run by possibly the biggest bunch of idiots on the Internet.

The Ballad of the Blue Ox Babes

Cherry Red Records were kind enough to send me this.

ET Recommends - 36: Kitchen's Floor

As I said somewhere else just now, I keep forgetting how much I remain in love with the thrill of live music.

(interlude)

Oh yeah, The Legend! + The Deadnotes played last night too.

ET Recommends - 35: Blank Realm

I so rarely go out to shows any more, I keep forgetting how much in love I remain with the thrill of live music.

some links for you all

Here are a few more things I've written in the past couple of weeks.

My Last FM Top 20 (week 10)

A day ago, I didn't even know what a sub-woofer was. Now, I can't believe I've lasted so many years without owning one. Man alive. I want these floorboards to VIBRATE! And if you haven't done so already, I'd totally recommend checking out the Elizabeth Archer link below.

the actual origins of kill rock stars

Sorry. Can't resist following up the previous post with this.

the actual origins of Sub Pop

It's about time someone put this up on the Internet. Trust K Records.

Six great 80s videos

Crass, the demo

My Last FM Top 20 (week 9)

This week's chart is based on this week's plays - and the position of Mr Van Zandt at the top of the pile is more a reflection that Domino were kind enough to send me seven full-length reissues the other day than any late-come conversion to bearded 70s rock. I'm not even sure how much I like him - but I sure as skanking know how I much I love The Skatalites, Theo Beckford, Terry Hall, Susan Cadogan, Rhoda Dakar and the rest of the gang.

Steve Albini, the definitive article

One of my music blog class just emailed me the link to this classic article.

Tom Waits for free

Heaven knows I'm not one to fall for record companies' promotional gimmicks but...

Patrik Fitzgerald (the documentary)

So, damn it all, if I didn't miss alerting you all to Raindance's on-line première of All The Years Of Trying, Dom Shaw's DVD documentary of Patrik Fitzgerald (it was a few days back)...

Patrik Fitzgerald (the graffiti)

Torgeir writes...

Patrik Fitzgerald (the press clipping)

Patrik Fitzgerald (the tribute album)

...and so, I figured that I'm never going to get round to posting up all this news concerning Patrik's tiny corner of the world and... well, that bothered me. So what I figured I'd do is carry on reprinting emails from my correspondents. Not least because this one is so comprehensive!

This next one is from the very likeable Torgeir Lund, the man behind Crispin Glover Records (and Torgeir, you have my abject apologies for not doing a detailed run-down on this album like yours but really I felt is was unnecessary after yours, plus I just think the whole project is great, top-notch)...

Patrik Fitzgerald (an introduction)

OK. So it happened like this.

Brisbane's new bridge (Hale St - West End)

It's going to be called the Go-Between bridge. Yep. After The Go-Betweens.

... you think Olympia, WA are going to be naming any of their walkways "Beat" Happening any day soon?
