Song of the day - 41: The Pipettes

I'm going to keep the faith here, for a while longer.

It's a change of sound, a change of direction. To these ears, it sounds like they've smoothed out many of the rough edges that made Pipettes Mk1 so delicious and charming - I wouldn't blink if you played this to me in a club, and announced it as whoever. Popjustice.com compares this song to early Bananarama... er, that would be mid-period Banarama then, because it sure don't sound like 'It Ain't What You Do (It's The Way That You Do It)'... but I think that's missing the point, as those ladies always retained a strong sense of identity about their voices. Also, weren't there three of them? (There's two of the lady Pipettes now.) As I say, though, I'm going to keep the faith for a little while longer - because I'm aware that I was a sucker for the 60s harmonies and style moves and handclaps of Pipettes Mk1, and crucially they were my Pipettes and I have faith that my faith is going to be justified.

So here we have it. Pipettes Mk2, all slinky disco grooves and soft focus lighting. It would be tempting (and funny) to say that Italians Do It Better do it better, but not very fair. So I won't.
