writing for free on the Internet

Swedish modette

There's a lot of literature about this right now, particularly on the Internet.

Somehow, the fact there's now a different medium to communicate via has confused people again. The same rules apply that have always applied. If you're writing for free and someone is making loads of money out of your writing, that's called exploitation. If you're writing for free and the publisher isn't making any money from it - or is making the bare minimum to get by (for example, Plan B Magazine) in return for the amount of hours they put in - that's fine. Transparency is key. Ultimately, the choice is yours.

I've written for free on numerous occasions - but only when I feel motivated to do so, and usually only for myself (hence this blog).

The danger comes when websites/magazines start building non-payment of writers into their business models. Perhaps there's a valid reason Faster Louder don't pay?
