The answer is simple: I can't. The Donnas rule. They've a new album out, Greatest Hits Vol. 16, celebrating 16 years as a band. For my money, "Teenage Rules" still fucking rules the roost - but I would say that, right?
YES! I gave up trying to find a reason not to love The Donnas years ago.

I def like their older stuff! And chemistry. I thought Gold Medal was a yawner (though the album cover and associated t-shirts were totally kick-ass).
ReplyDeleteWhat really strikes me about them is what decent people they are. Around 2003 I heard them interviewed on a local radio station.. a station that NEVER plays female artists... and when the interviewer asked if they'd ever all done the same guy at the same time, they became rightfully pissed off, and basically told him he was being a jackass (not in so many words, but they let him know). The interview ended in chaos, they were invited to leave, and the disc jockies spent a couple hours calling them "bitches" and "whores" over and over on the air... and saying they'd never play their music. I was sick to my stomach.
In 2005 The Donnas came to the Rock n' Roll Camp for Girls and talked to the campers about their experiences being in a band, and with the music business. They were sweet, smart, and considerate. You can't not like them as people (unless you're a creep).

i think they were in their teens when they played my club the lift in brighton - might have been 13 or 14 years ago... it was first uk tour if i remember rightly. they were spectacular even in that little room.
