Wake In Fright

Thoughts on watching Wake In Fright again.

It's a great movie, for one (see over here for further appraisal from me).

Third time around, it still makes for incredible viewing - especially in the way the camera faces up to the merciless heat and isolation of Australia's outback, the relentless male camaraderie. I can recall weeks, months, spent thinking that I was aware life was going on as normal around me, that not everyone was waking up unable to cope, desperate for their next alcohol fix, but unable to picture such "normality" at all. Where Wake In Fright is truly chilling is in its depiction of alcohol as a substitute for... everything... the false brotherhood and laughter of endless pints and whiskies.

Fuck, I really don't miss the days of waking up in strange buildings.

Fuck, I really don't miss the days of drunken fumblings.

I'm actually kind of scared that one of these days a switch in my brain will click and I'll be able to remember EVERYTHING.
