the myth of Daniel Johnston

Interesting article from David McNamee about DJ on The Guardian's website.

...These days, it's almost taboo to say anything critical about Johnston. This is incredibly patronising. For one thing, it makes any honest evaluation of his work impossible. He might wring out much beauty from his cartoon-like songs, but he is also capable of lewdness (bizarre, crude references to masturbation and orgasms are frequent) and incredible self-pity...

The article is here.

    "He may not chase fame..."

I had to laugh at that opening statement.

Sure. And I'll get some notes to you this week.

Congratulations on the new addition to your family. I couldn't help noticing the name you picked out.

Daniel once made a deal with Gibby that they would name their first born sons after each other. The world still awaits...

An article about the genius of Daniel's myth would have made a much better read.

i actually think his studio records are better, but the weird tape ones that came out on homestead were what made me interested in him, cuz they seemed..y'know...weird....nowadays they just seem "normal weird", or maybe FAMILIAR---explaining all that makes me want to put a gun in my mouth, because it explains why the passion is gone not just from me but you and him and her and everybody also...i mean who passes out cruddy cassette tapes nowadays because they think they can be the beatles in their mind? I bet there were at least 337 in Daniel's heyday, now I suspect there are approximately 8. Go find them and anoint them as your new deities.

  3. Hey,
this is an interesting article. I'm a huge fan of Johnston's music, but I have never been to a show and I don't think I ever will. Whatever people may think, there will be a sizeable portion of the audience just wanting to see something go wrong, and people are naturally morbidly curious. Despite this being the last thing i'd want to see, i'd hate to feel a part of it.

His music has had a massive impact on my life, and there's no doubt in my mind that he is a wonderful songwriter. I just don't subscribe to the notion that he is a man-child kind of figure who needs to be talked down to and taken care of, and I've seen enough interviews where he has been treated like this, and it makes me feel very uncomfortable.

    Thanks for reading.
