I'm not sure what I think of this.
I have a feeling it's complete and utter shite, and not because I care one way or another about the associations. It's just not done that well. I mean, the Amy Winehouse and Peter, Bjorn And John one doesn't work either. The Kelis vs Franz Ferdinand mash-up, on the other hand...
And I am really grooving to 'Toxic' right now, thanks to the unrelenting commerciality of YouTube's recommended links.

I was talking to some friends about codifying music and the ridiculous idea that "pop punk" exists at all. The vast majority of "punk" music has a pop core so it's never a surprise that the pieces fit together like a retarded game of Tetris. This mashup reminds me that intent is everything. That's the difference between the good and the enemy.

I'm no great afficionado of mash-ups (what a repellent term by the way), but I do quite like that Rick Astley / Nirvana effort. Then again you can't argue with Smell's Like and Risk Astley is undoubtedly the most underrated of all SAW acts.
ReplyDeleteOn the subject of Toxic, check out Duncan's Divas version -

And while you're there check out their version of Can't Get You Out of My Head which is - to be frank - indescribably good.
well i liked it, made me laugh. Out of tune, and doesn't give a fuck
ReplyDeleteThat tattoo is a mash up in itself - "Axl Cobain"
