The man was a genius.
I keep telling you.
P.S. Went to see Ivor Cutler perform one time, at Southbank. He was in his 70s. I was in my 30s. He was curmudgeonly and went into a brilliant diatribe against people smoking at the front (still allowed at shows back then). I cowered at the back, secure in my non-nicotine smugness, and laughed where appropriate. His pedal organ contraption was quite the most genius instrument I've seen of its type since Nico.
P.P.S. I've been meaning to cover this song for about two decades now. I'm scared I might forget the words.

Dear ET
ReplyDeleteIve not heard of the man but will now surely get busy lifting the veil on the life and ideas. Thanks everett for your continued unabated knowledge of such substantial and so obscure cultural hand me down icons.

He taught some friends of mine, he was a primary school teacher in Notting Hill in the 70s. Sounded quite 'experimental'. I met him in a public library in Westminster once, we chatted for a few moments then he took out his wallet, fished about in it for a moment then handed me a little sticker that read 'You are very beautiful'. Then he walked off. I wasn't uniquely privileged, I talked to colleagues and he apparently did that often. What a nice thing to do. What a special guy.

I can just tell from his voice that he had a dark side. But whether it was child abuse, fascism, or Satanism, it's hard to judge from his lyrics.

I was at that Southbank show - he was supporting David Thomas. Only time i ever got front row seats right in the centre. I took a photograph of him and he stopped mid sentence and told me off at great length. A few months later i saw him walking one Sunday afternoon holding hands with a young Indian boy and as we passed he gave me another good glaring at - coldest eyes i ever saw.
Can't see what song you are thinking of, but i can see you
doing an ace 'Life in a scotch sitting room' (the fourth one i think)
you turned me on to him a few months ago having mentioned him in a Village Voice blog.. I truly love what I've seen of him on the youtube. He is the Real Deal.
