ET Recommends - 5: The Lovely Eggs

The Lovely Eggs

Ah jeez.

It's like listening to The Vaselines being interpreted by The Bobby McGee's interpreting Moldy Peaches while severely under the influence of snakebite. It's like being exposed to five generations of art students pretending they're still seven years old and that's it's still really amusing to say 'poo'. It's like a musical enema. It's like hearing Richard Brautigan being interpreted by the web 2.0 generation whose only exposure to TV is Arctic Boosh and that stupid wee intro with the lo-res birds that used to introduce Big Brother. This song might have a stupid title, but it's so obviously a Nirvana rip I shouldn't even bother commenting. There are xylophones and noisy bits and cuteness designed to infuriate the fuck out of whoever's unlucky enough to be passing. Much like a slow cooker at the seaside. There's repetition used to Jonathan Richman effect, and ukuleles (which are way overrated, someone really needs to point out). It's like listening to Soko's 'I'll Kill Her' 3,838,031 times all by oneself. One song is even called 'I Collect Snails'.

But I can't help myself. I fucking love The Lovely Eggs.

I sure don't get the Daniel Johnston comparison, though.

  1. They're such a splendid IMMENSE live turn and really genuinely lovely people, I put them on in Nottingham with Hotpants Romance a month or so back and only but a faithful few turned up- that really irritated me, if either band or both bands had been American the place would've been rammed... that probably doesn't stand up to scrutiny that remark- it's a bit boneheaded- but I've made it anyway... me and a promoter friend got branded 'paedophiles' for daring to put the gig on by a passing and pissed Ingerlund fan... some people just don't get it, do they?

I wish I'd seen The Lovely Eggs and The Bobby McGees on the same bill, that would've been a right royal treat and no mistake

  2. The Daniel Johnston comparison made sense at the time.
I think I was trying to make a point about outsider art.
You're right about the Bobby McGees, I actually meant to put that in the review but it slipped my mind at the last minute.
Anyhow, yes, the Eggs are rather Lovely, aren't they?

  5. I cannot get down with this band. I saw thim this week, and everything you like them in spite-of, I hate them for.

    I cannot abide affectation.

And I REALLY don't get the Dan Johnston comparison. DJ is heart-shatteringly genuine.
