OK ... gotta tell a story about this.
ReplyDeleteIn 1985 I was a roady for That Petrol Emotion and got to spend some time with the O'Neil brothers. I loved this song and had tried to learn how to play it. It was pretty easy to learn, but I couldn't seem to get the lead on the end right.
After I got to know Damien a bit I decided it was cool to ask him how he played it. He seemed surprised and laughed at me. He said it was really simple and couldn't believe I didn't have it.
I asked him to show it to me anyway, so he picked up a guitar and played it for me. I could see right away that it was the standard Chuck Berry style riff that every guitar player picks up as soon as they master basic scales.
However, Damien was playing it with the "wrong" fingers. He was using his first two fingers instead of the first and third. It's easier to play using the third finger to do the stretches, so the way Damien was playing it, the stretches were harder to play and they came out sounding a little strained. Ideal for this song, but as I said, not the way it's "supposed" to be played.
To my credit, it was that mysterious strained tone I was trying to get.
When Damien played it for me, I said "Oh, I get it ... you're playing that riff with the wrong fingers!"
And he said: "I know. But I was 17 and had only played guitar for a few weeks when we recorded that."
Classic.
