Anyone can write about music, sure.
But can you write about music when the clock's ticking down, you know nothing about the artist in question and you've never heard the album before?
And you only had a minute to start with.
Bo Ningen - Koroshitai Kimochi EP
Blam! That's the ferociously heavy, grungy guitars fucking with the Tannoy. Bam! That's the full-throated squealing vocals coming to grips with the fact they're allowed to ANNOY as much as they want. Like Huggy Bear, with no love for either Beat Happening or Sonic Youth showing. Like Afrirampo, but NASTY.
Lonelady - Nerve Up
Aggrieved, aggravated, misanthropic bedroom femme pop from Manchester that does for Ze Records what...no wait, not Ze. Plenty of truncated, choppy chords and jagged rhythms that make me feel like we've all been mainlining Delta 5 for decades. (Some of us have.)
To Kill A Petty Bourgeoisie - Marlone
I'm not prejudiced but... the opening track is eight minutes long, full of post-Mogwai textures and made by a group calling themselves To Kill A Fucking Petty Bourgeoisie. Richey Edwards has a lot to answer for. This will appeal to those who prefer their music shorn of both rhythm and melody.
Tap Tap - On My Way
I'VE GOT THE NEW TAP TAP ALBUM! I'VE GOT THE NEW TAP TAP ALBUM! I'VE FINALLY GOT THE NEW TAP TAP ALBUM! I'VE GOT THE NEW TAP TAP ALBUM! I'VE GOT THE NEW TAP TAP ALBUM! I'VE GOT THE NEW TAP TAP ALBUM! Bangs alive, but 2009 has been a lush year for records...Maher Shalal Hash Baz/Bill Wells, The Pastels/Tenniscoats, The Bats, Songs, The Clean...and now Tap Tap. Like staring directly into the face of the sun and going blind instantly and NOT FUCKING CARING. Like travelling down a highway, 100kph, wind blowing through all windows, speakers turned up to max, sun directly in your eyes and NOT FUCKING CARING. Like fucking the world and giving breed to a new nobility of beautifully melancholic singers.
PS: I might have lied further up this entry. I might have heard Tap Tap (Tom Sanders from Pete And The Pirates) once or twice before.

The addition of the word 'album' makes it sort of jazzy.
ReplyDeleteYou're right. "It" would have worked better
ReplyDeleteAs in "I've got the new Tap Tap it!"? That's got a more post-punk beat for me. But I'm not sure about the lyric.
ReplyDeletePastels/Tenniscoats is fucking great you're right.

Didn't know what you were on about, googled it: "Tap Tap Revenge is a music game created by Nate True" says Wikipedia. I wonder if he was born Nate Thackray?

It's a pity, if "I've got the new Tap Tap! I've got the new Tap Tap!" was just some random nonsense you were saying that would have been beautiful. It might have caught on. It's so catchy.

It's dangerously catchy. Been repeating it mindlessly to myself for the last half hour.

Damn, but they're both great. And, now I'm into Tap Tap for about the fifth time this last hour...can you hear a real similarity between it and Panda Bear?

Frances Morgan
I haven't heard it yet! I need to get a copy from somewhere. I liked the last one a lot, and thought it much less self-consciously out-there than stuff like Panda Bear (whom I do also like), just good and fresh and lovely music.

oh yes. i don't think you'll hear any disagreement from these quarters about that! i prefer Tap Tap a 100-fold (precisely because of that). just that i think there are similarities.

I like the one-minute reviews. They really go BAM! One thing I really like about following your facebook/blog/reviews, is being introduced to so many different exciting music and artists from all around the world. I am really glad that I found your work... and it's all because you wrote that (great) book about NIRVANA. I am amazed at how much, in his short career, Kurt Cobain used his position to bring recognition to so many other artists, & thrilled that you have been carrying that torch in your way, as well. hugs & kisses to you & yours.
