Nirvana anecdote

I made $1.71 from coins thrown at me on stage, the night that new Nirvana bonus live CD was recorded.

Mark Lanegan went round and picked them up afterwards - enabled me to play six games of pinball. Tad, standing at the side of the stage during my set, remarked to Calvin Johnson, "that guy's pure entertainment" - "No," Calvin replied. "He's punk rock and that's something you'll never be."

The following night, I got the sound pulled on me in San Francisco after one and a half songs. Dwarves refused to follow me on stage they were laughing so hard.

P.S. Someone video'd that Pine Street Theatre gig.

P.P.S. The photo is by Charles Peterson. Least, I'm fairly sure it's by Charles...

P.P.P.S Wow! And here's the review from back in the day! Thanks to Bert C for that.

  2. Woah internet! I just did a blog search to see if there are any reviews of the Soulsavers/Depeche Mode shows and found this and there's a link to my Screaming Trees site. Glad to see it's good for something!

Calvin would say something like that haha. But it's kind of true, TAD is too heavy to be punk, they are more like metal in my eyes. Now were they pelting you with change, or just "tipping" you?

pelting. it was a real eye-opener (um, eye-closer) because up to that point I had mostly only performed in front of sympathetic audiences. i fucking loved it. had my trusty Parka on and pulled the hood up tight. and I guess the Sub Pop bands present loved it too, the number of times I climbed on stage with them after...

"punk ain't no religious cult punk is thinking for yourself." I still believe it. Can't speak for Tad *or* Calvin but methinks it oughta be more wide open than some let it. PS: we are loving us some Lanegan & Soulsavers.

Everett True It's been pointed out on the Live Nirvana forum that on the live CD that comes with the Reading DVD, the crowd noise has been increased to mask Dave Grohl singing Boston's More Than A Feeling over the start to Smells Like Teen Spirit...
