Song of the day - 97: Althea & Donna

Inspired by a recent entry on the fine Don't Dance Her Down Boys blog, I thought I'd post this.

Man alive, this was a great UK Number One. Killer look, as well. This version on Top Of The Pops has just gotta be live, it's way different to the recorded one, surely? Can someone confirm or otherwise? Ah, whatever. Sorry about the way it cuts out.

Number 1 the day I was born, and it kicked Mull Of Kintyre off the top spot!

I had the odd fortune to spend much of the two worst months of the entire punk era in London (Dec. 77-Feb '78 - better remembered as the Age of Joe Dolce, followed by the Age of Gobbing). "Uptown Top Ranking" was SO brilliant - and thankfully it was on the air everywhere. Gina do you want to say anything about it for "Prams"?

seem to remember reading only a couple of days ago that the TOTP performance, like much stuff at that point, was backed up by the TOTP Orchestra, an outfit that was much more known for getting pissed and playing Mantovani-esque light music accompaniment then... well, reggae.
