Fuck, but I'd forgotten how many great records (not just The Birthday Party/Boys Next Door etc) he played on - especially those incredible Jacobites sides. I believe he has a wake happening this Thursday in St Kilda, everyone welcome.
I've written a short tribute over at The Guardian.
Rowland S Howard - She Cried
Boys Next Door - Shivers
Rowland S Howard & Lydia Lunch - Some Velvet Morning
The Jacobites - Death Is Hanging Over Me
The Birthday Party - Rowland Around In That Stuff
These Immortal Souls - Marry Me

Ah then I saw him in my first London gig. I was 15 and snuck off to London without my parents knowing, saw them support Sonic Youth at the Mean Fiddler, had no money so had to walk all the way back overnight to Waterloo

Robert Forster near-dragged me to watch him at ATP last January. I'm so glad he did. It was a great show. Fucking amazing guitarist: one of my two or three fave Aus guitarists, no shadow of a doubt.

I saw him play with Nikki Sudden in a little place in N London - incredible gig, great to watch him from about a yard away. Then he put on his parka, picked up his guitar case and slipped off to get the tube on his own

i see him more as an anti-guitar hero. he was above (or beside) technicality, and was more like some wired painter stretching colours and tones and atmosphere all over the fucking place. his influence is immeasurable, i remember even the guitarist from Bush (yes, THAT band) praising him on Rage in the nineties. that's not counting all the GREAT musicians he's influenced. but beyond that, he represented independent thinking in our small scene - did it his way. RIP.
